Further clarification by the Ministry of Health regarding the positive cases linked to education field

In the weekly review from 5 to 11 October, the Ministry of Health stated that 12% of all positive cases in Luxembourg are linked to education field.

The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth would like to emphasise that this number is not limited to persons who tested positive and who attend a public or private primary/secondary school in Luxembourg, but also includes, in particular, all students from the University of Luxembourg as well as foreign universities, who reside in Luxembourg.

In this field, a significant increase in cases in connection with the Belgian universities, namely Leuven, Namur and Liège has been noted.

As a reminder, the report stating the number of pupils and teachers who tested positive and who attend the Luxembourg school system has recently been published by the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth. It refers to the period from 15 September to 9 October 2020 and stating the following numbers.

As infections linked to activities in the national education system in Luxembourg can be considered:

  • 8 positive cases linked to two infection chains (scenario 3: infection chain with several cases linked to an in-school infection;
  • 85 positive cases in a scenario that regroups two students of the same class (scenario 2: max. 2 positive cases in a class with uncertain source of infection).

Since classes resumed on 15 September, no major infection chain has been observed in the primary or secondary schools. More than 107.000 students attend public or private schools and more than 12.000 teachers work in those two sectors.
