New COVID-19 cases - Weekly review: 14 - 20 September

During the week of 14 to 20 September, there has been a high increase in the number of residents testing positive for COVID-19 with 672 people compared to 282 in the previous week. The number of contacts has increased by 152% with 5,441 contacts compared to 2,163 in the previous week.

The number of PCR tests carried out on residents amounts to 40.596 compared to 50.957 the previous week.

As of 20 September, the number of active infections was 953 (compared to 564 on 13 September), while the number of people healed increased from 6,556 to 6,839. Hospital capacity was a little more strained than in the previous week and no new deaths related to COVID-19 are to be deplored.

The effective reproduction rate (R) increased from 1,01 to 1.44 while the positivity rate on the tests carried out was 1.66% (average of the week) against 0.55% the previous week.

The 7-day incidence rate is 107.33 per 100,000 residents.

During the week of 14 to 20 September, the average age of those diagnosed as COVID-19 positive increased to 33.4 years.

Quarantine  and isolation

For the week of 14 to 20 September, 2,284 people were in quarantine (+91% compared to the previous week) and 768 in isolation (+32% compared to the previous week).

Contamination

The proportion of holiday-related cases continues to decrease slightly from 32% to 31%, but remains the most important cause.

In addition, 20% of cases are related to the family environment and 6% to the work environment. 3% are related to family or friends' parties.

Waste water monitoring in Luxembourg as part of SARS-CoV-2

According to the latest CORONASTEP report on the monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 in waste water in Luxembourg, prepared by the LIST (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology), it appears that the national level of SARS-CoV-2 contamination remains stable, with results that are very similar to those of week 37. However, a re-emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 signal has been detected in three wastewater treatment plants (Mersch, Uebersyren and Wiltz) with signals very close to the test's limit of detection. The geographical differences persist with the same four treatment plants (Pétange, Beggen, Schifflange and Bettembourg) being strongly impacted while the other treatment plants remain at a low level of contamination. The SARS-CoV-2 signal was not detectable in four (Echternach, Grevenmacher, Boevange-sur-Attert and Troisvierges) of the thirteen wastewater treatment plants.
